Contemporary art gallery providing a showcase for original British paintings, prints, sculpture and crafts in Ludlow town centre. Open Tuesday – Saturday 11.00 am – 4.00 pm.
Many of you have been wondering about the future of the gallery and after a period of uncertainty following Jill’s death, we at last have news to bring you. David Howorth explains:
As you probably are aware, we have, since Jill’s passing in November, put on exhibitions of work by Simon Dorrell and Frans Wesselman, as well as Christmas and summer exhibitions. New work is still being added.
It seems probate may take nearly a year, meanwhile we have been looking at the future of the gallery. It was Jill’s wish, if at all possible, that there should be a gallery at 4 Quality Square promoting, as she did, the work of a wide variety of artists.
I am very pleased to tell you that that the gallery will in the autumn move forward to a new and exciting era when Mary and Hugh Elliott from Twenty Twenty Gallery in Much Wenlock move in. Their exhibitions are always excellent and it will be interesting to see how they use the very different space of Quality Square.
Mary writes: “I first met Jill Howorth at an Own Art training day about ten years ago. I had heard about the Silk Top Hat Gallery through some of the artists who exhibited with Jill and she was respected by all of those that I met. I found her to be serious and a little daunting to begin with until I found a similar dry sense of humour.
At the time Jill didn’t own a computer, a website wasn’t seen as necessary and social media would’ve been snorted at. Her skills were supporting a community of artists and customers who had become friends. She provided a unique environment exhibiting a huge number of artists over the years, often supplemented by Top Hat Tours and events. It was a lot of work and commitment.
The number of people at Jill’s memorial event was testament to her relationships and the respect she was held in as a gallery owner and her work in community.
David Howorth has talked to me, and many others about the future of the gallery and we have agreed that it would be good to continue using the building as gallery space.
From 1st September until 31st December 2017 we will be moving into Quality Square as Twenty Twenty Gallery. We will not be moving away from Much Wenlock where we have been for over 14 years, but we see Ludlow as an exciting larger town, which has the key elements of a rural location and a creative community.
We cannot re-create Jill’s unique gallery, it would be impossible to follow in her footsteps, but we do hope that you will visit our exhibitions and hopefully find some new paintings, prints and sculpture to enjoy.
If you would like to be invited to the Private View of our first exhibition in September please do contact us via our website (www.twenty-twenty.co.uk) or telephone the gallery (01952 727952) in Much Wenlock. We shall look forward to meeting you.”

Meanwhile the Silk Top Hat Gallery has lots of interesting work for you to enjoy. The Gallery Shop has a sale of many gift items and artists’ materials.
Over the next couple of months there will be some changes as we prepare for Mary’s opening exhibition on 1st September. The last week in July will see the Gallery Shop moving across to Isaac Smart’s to continue until the end of August. The gallery will be closed in August for much needed painting and refurbishing.
There will be a final printed Newsletter in August.
